Research by the river

Bees became professional scientists these days. One windy day they went for the walk outside with the main aim to find water in the closest area. While walk they have found a river, because teacher could not see it very well – they pointed to the sign with its name – Bytomka. “Oh, our teachers know nothing” – Maks stated… 😉

 

Indeed, we have a small river nearby! Its` name, Bytomka, has the beginning in Bytom, neighbour city, as well as its source. Tens of years ago Bytomka was very polluted, because of industry – coal mines, iron and steel works, metalworks etc. From past twenty years people tried to improve its quality, and it is much better now.

Nowadyas we can see animals close to the river, but no fish. Even these days some people throw rubbish into the river or close to the river bank! Bees were searching both for animals and rubbish…

Children wanted to touch the water of Bytomka, but it was too dangerous to come too close. Teacher Ania took some water into the bucket. Then, children discussed its quality and cleanness. They put water into the bottle for future experiments.

Then – Bees continued their walk by the river. They noticed a sign saying that ‘Throwing rubbish is not allowed”, a bridge to go back, a swan (swimming on the grass instead of water) and fire plug!

Water bar by Bees

Bees discussed water topic some time ago. Mind map about water was rich in knowledge and ideas. Children talked about the meaning and importance of water for humans and nature…

As children stated that we cannot survive without water, they got the idea of having water bar
(restaurant with different types of water in menu).

Here we play water bar with teacher Ania. Besides suplementing water into their bodies, children practiced polite behavior in the restaurant. Bees used such words as” “Can I have…?”, “Please…” or “Thank you”. They could decide which type of water they want to drink and ask for this.

We are not bored with the rain anymore!

It was quite rainy day in Zabrze. Dwarfs really wanted to go outside and were eagerly waiting for the sun.

Preschoolers were observing weather by the window and because nothing has changed they started to think: Why actually it is raining? Why are clouds so dark?

Children and teachers wanted to find some answers to these questions. At first they made experiment introducing formation of rain.

The next step was making picture story „How is it raining?” with creative materials.

Free play and water discoveries by Bees

That was amazing water place for Bees discoveries! Children has visited a water area in Park 12c – an attraction in Sztolnia Królowa Luiza in Zabrze (link)

The aim of the visit here was discovering the system of pumps, water channels and locks by children, in interactive way, devoping both their knowledge and social skills.

Water – let`s find it!

The Dwarfs received next task from Pelka the Drop. They had to find water in the kindergarten and its` surroundings.

The youngest preschoolers found water in the bathroom and in the hall very fast.

 

Unfortunately, when children went outside they realized that it isn’t so easy. The weather was sunny and there wasn’t any puddle in the nearby. The Dwarfs were looking for it everywhere (even in the shop!) and finally they found it!

 

It emerged that the water was hiding in the drains, in the watering can, bottles, in the sandpit and in the pot.

Hurray! Let`s go further next time!

Where is the water?

Homework task in the kindergarten? No worries, “Dwarfs” like discovering the world with their parents at home!

Children were asked to find the picture of water in the books, internet, newspapers, etc. with the help of their parents, at home. Parents have sent us pictures of kids discoveries…

If only it was possible – children printed the picture out or cut it, and bring to the kindergarten. In the small groups “Dwarfs” talked about places where the water is.

PELKA – Little drop from Poland

Little drop Pelka fell down from clouds today, straight to “Skrzaty” (“Dwarfs”) – the youngest group in the kindergarten.

She gave children few tasks to perform. The first task was about finding Pelka`s picture.

The next step of this adventure was to copy Pelka`s shape with the use of different materials: feathers, bricks, pompoms, creative materials and even children.

Little drop Pelka became an inspiration for kids` sharing with what they already know about water… And of course the question: What we would like to know about water?

How to present water?

Children from “Zuchy” group were asked: How can we present water to others? Is this possible? The answer was fast and clear: YES. We can draw it!

“Zuchy” are discovering the topic of water

Last days the group of 5-6 year-olds called “Zuchy” started their discovery in a topic of WATER. They made a brainstorming session about the water itself, places where we can find it and its purpose.

That was indeed quite “stormy” brainstorming session;) In one of kids` statements it was said that our Planet Earth consists of lots of water, that is why  Earth is seen in green and brown colours from Space.

The first thing children wanted to do within this water project (which is the FIRST eTwinning project in this group) was… Planet Earth! Children used salt, flour and water (exactly the same amount of each substance), added some food pigments, made a paste of that and painted a paper shape of Earth. Then, they put their work into microwave to get… amazing shapes and texture.

Water Adventure Lesson with parents (PL)

These days Polish group of Bees had a Water Adventure lesson, which was the last “Learning Community” day within our last eTwinning project “Bunch of eGrapes”. Because it is all about water, we decided to share it with you here, in Erasmus Water Cycle space…

While this learning opoortunity Bees were playing with various water tasks, together with five parents and special job shadowing guest – Alina Wujcik, an eTwinning ambassador from Łódź, Poland. As previously did, children formed six groups and went for team adventures, supported by a Little Drop of water they met for the first time.

TASTE OF WATER

There was a special place children could taste the water. Bees had five different tastes of water to recognize – still water, plain water with lemon flavour, apple flavour, strawberry flavour or raspberry one. Bees also clarified their favourite taste. They shared with first opinion about the healthiest type of water – which topic is going to be widely discussed later on.

DOES IT GO DOWN?

Children made an experiment with a collection of items to check how they behave when put into the water. Bees used a special observation card to mark the result of observation.

WATER SOUNDS

This activity was the great opportunity for stimulation and creativity. Children were trying to discover sounds of instruments which could match with various situations connected with water, like sounds of: river, fountain, waterfall,  raining, storm, sea sound of waves, sink etc.

ART OF WAVES

So cool to paint on the wall.. Bees could feel like real artists, using blue paint to make an art work while listening to the music in the background…

DROP SIZE AND EXTENT

This station consisted on two different task in the matter of comparing size and volume.
First, children tried to make an order from the biggest water drop to the smallest or just the other way about.  File with water drop to compare: DIFFERENT WATER SIZE

Then, Bees played with water to fill containers with a “small” amount, “medium” and “big” amount of water. They also used written words and drawings to join the amount with the meaning of words.

MEASURING WATER

The last station was giving children the opportunity to calculate the amount of water needed to fill the container. Bees used pbs game called “Bubble bath” (http://pbskids.org/peg/games/bubble-bath). They did some counting and had a lot of fun, especially when they chose too much containers to fill the bath of Peg and Cat…

Finally, there came the time to find the treasure of the adventure. of course, it was the WATER. Meantime Bees made a coding task to meet the name of Little Drop who is PELKA, the mascot which will be playing with us in this eTwinning project.
